So, I got rid of cable TV, subscribed to Netflix, got a broadcast TV antenna, saved tons of money and now watch only what I want. This is the first TV show I feel compelled to buy on streaming video. Amazon charged my credit card $2.84 for HD Season 5 Episode 1 this Monday morning and I already watched it twice just hours after its premier. No spoilers here, don't want to kill the thrill for anyone. This is the most exhilarating TV ride I've been on. The good thing about buying episodes on Amazon is that there are no commercials and you can pay to see current shows the day after release. Wish they would play on my phone like Netflix. The Lumineers After hearing 'Ho Hey' a number of times on the Current in Mpls I had to check out the rest. After listening to track 1 (Flowers in your Hair) I was already hitting the download button. Zero regrets, there isn't a dud to be heard. Lots of boot stomping and hand clapping as percussion along with some sweet melodies and beautiful lyrics. I'm not very good at writing about music but if you like stuff like the Avett Brothers or Low Anthem or The Head & the Heart I'm pretty sure you will like this. The difference here is that Fun. uses auto-tuning, not to compensate for the soloist's inability to sing (as a disturbingly increasing number of popular artists do these days -- as we have seen in his live performances Nate Ruess can really belt one out). Hatfields & McCoys (2012) The History Channel miniseries "Hatfields and McCoys", directed by Kevin Reynolds and written by Ted Mann and Bill Kerby enjoyed brisk ratings this week. Thus far, this rendering of the epic struggle between two families living in West Virginia and Kentucky is the best one to date. That is not to say that it did not have many flaws. In general, I admired Ted Mann's work on the HBO series "Deadwood", where he created great dialogue for both fictional and real denizens of the South Dakota boom town. The characters in this miniseries also generally speak with a high level of intelligence with only a few hillbilly archetypes thrown in. I've seen every episode thus far of Breaking Bad inside and out, and this, without question, was one of the best episodes yet. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, Vince Gilligan and Co. keep the twists coming, and the evolution of the characters is downright phenomenal. The arc of the episode seems a little helter skelter at times, but the climax - and the whirlwind of excitement, suspense, and (spoiler) tragedy that come along with it - keep fueling the anxiety for the next new Sunday episode.
